Phantoms Strike Early, Defeat Ottawa 3-1

Saturday, May 26th 2012

The Seacoast United Phantoms earned another well deserved 3 points in the Northeast division standings on Saturday evening when they defeated visiting Ottawa Fury by a score of 3-1.  The game was the first of the season for Ottawa, while the Phantoms improve to 3-0-2.

Seacoast United jumped out in front early on, scoring in the 4th minute when striker Kenny Doublette served a cross from the right hand side, finding midfielder Yannick Kabala who tucked the ball past Ottawa goalkeeper Chad Bush to the far post.  Ottawa missed an opportunity to equalize just 6 minutes later when a free kick from 25 yards out was blasted on goal, saved by Phantoms goalkeeper Colin O’Donnell.

Both squads were patient in their attacking game until the 32nd minute.  A free kick was awarded after Doublette was taken down 30 yards out, and the shot accurate on goal.  However, Bush failed to handle it cleanly and defender Ryan Dunn capitalized on the loose ball to extend the Phantoms lead to 2-0.

Ottawa quickly responded.  Just two minutes later, striker Alex Rodriguez beat O’Donnell to his left side, closing the gap to 2-1 heading to halftime.

The Phantoms were off to another quick start in the 2nd half, with Doublette’s speed causing problems for the Fury defenders.  Doublette held the ball on the right side once again before finding Dylan George on the back post unmarked, whose strike extended the lead to 3-1 in the 47th minute.

With plenty of time remaining in the match, Ottawa pushed forward in an attempt to draw closer, but were unable to create much against the Phantoms defense.

Phantoms coach John Price praised the play of his squad.  “It was an outstanding performance against a bigger, stronger, more physical presence,” said Price.

The Seacoast United Phantoms return to action on Saturday, June 2nd on the road to face Vermont Voltage.  Their next home game is Sunday, June 10th, the 2nd of a tripleheader on a day when Seacoast United will celebrate its 20th Anniversary.  Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30pm in a rematch vs. Ottawa.
