PORTSMOUTH, NH - The Seacoast United Phantoms welcomed fans to a sunny Portsmouth High School on Sunday afternoon as they kicked off their 2014 home season in the Premier Development League vs. CFC Azul (CT).
The visitors looked to play spoilers as they took advantage in the 25th minute when Phantoms goalkeeper Dominic Colman yielded a rebound within the 6 yd box. CFC midfielder Sebastian Brems jumped on the loose ball and tucked it away for the first goal of the game.
Seacoast pushed on late in the first half looking to even the score before the break, but CFC held the lead after 45 minutes.
Phantoms head coach Iain Scott made a change up top entering the 2nd half, with Andre Simmond replacing Andre Steele. Simmond threatened the CFC side and complimented midfielder Abel Perez in creating opportunities going forward early on.
Roughly 10 minutes into the half, CFC was called for a hand ball in the box resulting in a Phantoms penalty kick. CFC’s goalkeeper Eric Venezia stepped up big for the visiting side, stopping a Terence Carter shot to keep the lead for the time being.
In the 70th minute, CFC’s defense committed another foul just outside the box. Simmond stepped up to serve the free kick and connected with defender Ben Brewster for a header to equalize at 1. The celebration was short lived as CFC retaliated and capitalized on a mistake in the back to regain the lead at 2-1 on a goal from Eddie Bogle.
Even with the Phantoms pushing forward and moving AJ Dubois from center back to striker, CFC was able to hold on, fighting off several corner kicks in the last minutes of the match including 4 minutes of added time.
Each team finished with 9 shots on goal; CFC held the advantage in the first half and the Phantoms in the 2nd.
The Phantoms are now 1-1 on the young season, with their next game taking place May 30th at Portsmouth High School when they host Montreal Impact U23’s at 7pm.
