Phantoms Earn Point on the Road, Tie CFC 1-1

Wednesday, May 30th 2012

The Phantoms came into their first road game against CFC Passion at Post University, Connecticut after their season opener at home a week ago. CFC came out early very energetic and had large majority of possession for the first 10 minutes of the game. However, against the run of play, the Phantoms earned a corner which was driven near post by Jen Larrick and it was met by striker Krista Minto to flick into the goal to give the visiting side a 1-0 lead. The Phantoms started to find their rhythm and created a good chance 1v1 with the CFC goalkeeper however Minto failed to convert, striking the ball directly at the keeper. Thirty five minutes in, Phantoms were careless in possession and CFC hit an excellent strike from 25 yards out over keeper Andrea Green to tie up the game.

In the second half, Phantoms started out much more vibrant and kept possession for large periods of time.  Their effort had created further chances which were well saved by the CFC keeper. Phantoms goalkeeper Erica Correra (substution for Green) made a quality stop from a long range drive mid-way through the second half to keep the scores level. Neither team could find a second goal, and the game finished 1-1.

Phantoms head coach Chris Scott was satisfied with the tie in saying, “We started very slow allowing CFC to come at us, and in the first half we were very careless with our possession by forcing the ball forward too much. We changed it up in the second half to be more of an attacking team to trouble their defense, and we had chances, however did not take them. The girls know they could have won the game, but are pleased to take a point on their first road game.”

The Phantoms’ current record is 1-0-1 on the 2012 season and return home next Wednesday, June 6 at Portsmouth HS where they will meet New England Mutiny for a 6pm kick off.
