US Open Cup 2nd Round Preview: Tulsa Roughnecks FC

Departing on Tuesday afternoon, the Seacoast United Phantoms welcomed the mid-week business trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma for their U.S. Open Cup 2nd round matchup vs. USL-Pro Tulsa Roughnecks FC.  The game takes place at 8:05pm EST at the University of Tulsa Hurricane Soccer & Track Complex.

Striker Anthony Grant has provided the spark on offense, scoring three goals in two games, including two in the last 10 minutes of Saturday’s 2-1 win at GPS Portland Phoenix.

Wednesday’s match will be the first ever appearance in Open Cup play for Tulsa.

Entering the game, the Phantoms riding high after victories in each of their first two league games in the Premier Development League, plus the first round win over GPS Massachusetts.  The GPS game saw Seacoast United battle back from an 0-1 deficit with just 10 men for a 2-1 victory on an 88th minute goal by Sofiane Tergou.

There will be one familiar face in the opposition’s colors when the two teams take the field.  The Roughnecks defender Ben Brewster played two seasons with Seacoast United, and captained the 2014 team to the Northeast Division title.  Brewster, a graduate of Bowdoin College and native of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, signed his first professional contract with Tulsa in February.

The Roughnecks are looking forward to a home match, as the team has been on the road since April 16th.  In their last 4 games, Tulsa has posted a 1-2-1 record.  They are currently 10th in the USL’s Western Conference with an overall 2-4-2 record.
