Grant Tallies 2 Goals, 1 Assist in Win Over Pioneers

July 1, 2015

PORTSMOUTH, NH - The Seacoast United Phantoms began their 4-game home stand last night with a 4-2 victory over Western MA Pioneers as striker Anthony Grant propelled the offense with two goals and an assist.

The 2014 PDL MVP Finalist put the home team on the board in the 20th minute, taking advantage of a misplayed ball by the Pioneers defense.
The 1-0 score would hold until halftime as both teams struggled to form a consistent attack.

Thunderstorms would delay the start of the 2nd half, and the extended break seemed to benefit the visitors.  In the 50th minute, the Pioneers would equalize from a set piece, as a deflection hit the post before crossing the goal line.

It wouldn’t take long for the Phantoms to respond, as defender Barry McCabe served a beautiful cross from the right side, finding Grant for the finish and his second goal of the game to make it 2-1 in the 57th minute.  Grant’s bid for a hat trick was denied in the 62nd minute as his shot was tipped wide by the Pioneers goalkeeper.

Seacoast United Development Academy alumni would play a part in the Phantoms’ offense late in the match.  The Phantoms extended the lead to 3-1 in the 83rd minute in a similar setup to their prior score, as Grant’s cross found midfielder Steven Palumbo for his first goal of the season.  Jordan Misiri would be fouled in the box as he looked to cut around the defender, converting the penalty kick in the 87th minute.

The Pioneers would take one back in extra time, with the game ending at 4-2.  They will travel to New Hampshire one more time for the final game of the Phantoms’ 2015 season on July 12th.

The Seacoast United Phantoms are back in action on Friday, July 3rd when they host GPS Portland Phoenix for a 6pm kickoff at Portsmouth High School.  The clubs have met three times this season, producing a 1-1-1 record as they currently sit 1st and 2nd in the division.
