Seacoast United; Grand Circle Travel Team Up to Donate Soccer Equipment in Africa

Through a friendship founded on the soccer field during their high school years, Seacoast United’s Matthew Glode, and Grand Circle Travel’s James Henderer have begun to work together to provide donations worldwide.  Using soccer-specific donations generated by Matt Glode and Seacoast United, Grand Circle Travel has the ability to transport these donations to many regions around the world.  Glode oversees the Club’s Community Outreach and Kickback programs, and is the Director of Operations at the Seacoast United York facility.

Grand Circle Travel (GCT) is a travel company based out of Boston, MA that runs international trips for Americans ages 50+.  Recently, a group from the Boston office, including James, took a “Safari Serengeti” trip to Tanzania, Africa with Grand Circle’s sister company Overseas Adventure Travel.    Trip highlights included visiting the schools that GCT supports, spending a day with the Masai tribe, and spending 4 nights tenting out in the Serengeti, hosting morning and afternoon game drives every day.

Before leaving for Africa, Matt and James discussed the possibility of Seacoast United donating used soccer balls and clothing to the schools that Grand Circle supports.  There were 16 people scheduled to travel in James’ group, and by the time everything had been packed up, every single person in the group was bringing an extra bag to Africa filled with donations.  The soccer balls were a huge hit at the schools, everyone was extremely grateful and appreciative.  Balls were also given to local kids and families the group passed on their journey.   

Before the group departed for Africa, Glode also arranged for them to meet with Wycliffe Ngoya during their visit.  Ngoya is a team leader for the Sacrena Sports & Education Academy located in Homa Bay in the Kisumu Valley region of Kenya.   Wycliffe’s organization works with the less fortunate, local orphans and students by using sports to relay social change initiatives, community and personal empowerment, as well as educational curriculum students wouldn’t normally receive.  By receiving these donations they are able to greater serve their community, attract more visibility from within the community and surrounding areas, and allocate funds normally reserved for equipment to other educational programs & supplies.

Grand Circle Travel believes strongly in giving back to the communities they work in and travel to all around the world.  The Grand Circle Foundation was established in 1992.  Since then, with tremendous help from their travelers, the Foundation has donated more than $90 million worldwide to support the education of young people and the preservation of cultural treasures and traditions.  Additionally, more than 95% of Grand Circle’s associates participate in community service projects throughout the year.
