The Seacoast United Field Hockey Club recently competed at the USA FIELD HOCKEY Disney Showcase down in Orlando, Florida. After receiving two slots in the tournament, one U16 and one U19 team was sent down to represent the entire club.

The Disney Showcase is played at the beautiful ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex where they have thirty outdoor fields amongst the rest of their enormous arenas and stadiums. The format of the showcase is pool play games, followed by a complete tournament re-seeding into either a winners “Flight” or consolation “Flight”. There are 14 pools to begin, and both Seacoast United teams were placed in Pool C in their respective divisions.

The U16 team was a young group, consisting of mostly 8th graders and freshmen, who faced some of the highest-level clubs from Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. Improving every day, they finished the tournament with a 2-0 win over Stick Power Elite (VA).

The U19 team had tremendous experience, and had a strong overall performance. Holding the top ranked U19 team in the country WC Eagles to a 0-0 halftime score, with Senior Goalkeeper Tori Watson playing strong throughout the entire tournament. After going down 0-2 to two teams from Kentucky and Pennsylvania, the girls came back and exuded a solid victory against Miami-based Meerkats FHC, 7-0 with goals from 5 different Seacoast United players!

The most exciting piece of the tournament, was when all U19 teams were called to the main field of the complex after pool play, and were told that there would be ties in the reseeding process. Seacoast United went straight into a shootout with Marajoka FHC. Jeannine Turgeon, Carolyn Thompson, and Lela Boermeester scored for Seacoast United, and Tori Watson made 3 of 4 saves to secure the 32nd seed, earning a position in the top four flights of the tournament.

“I was thrilled to go down to Florida and represent Seacoast United at the USA field hockey event,” commented Assistant Program Director Melissa Nawn. “We are fortunate to have such tough competition here in the Northeast that prepares us to face high level teams from all over the country.” Nawn went on to say, “The Disney Showcase is a fantastic opportunity for our girls to test themselves against the best around. This was my third time to the showcase, and one of the most exciting to watch.”

After this performance, Seacoast United is thrilled to be entering into the tournament season, preparing for the National Indoor Tournament, and making our way into selections for our Spring Events. Look out for more success from Seacoast United through 2020!
