On Sunday, October 14th, the inaugural "McGowan Chase" (a ’rails to trails’ race) will take place in Newfields, NH to benefit three local organizations: The Wentworth Charities, Beyond the Rainbow, and the Seacoast United Foundation. Wentworth Charities focuses their fundraising on supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, while Exeter Hospital’s Beyond the Rainbow provides assistance to families struggling with cancer. The Seacoast United Foundation provides support to soccer families and local community soccer programs through scholarships and community grants.
The McGowan Chase is also being dedicated to the memory of Archie McGowan, father of Newfields residents Archie, Shawn & Gavin McGowan.
The race is being organized by Paul Willis of Seacoast United, and Shawn McGowan of Newmarket International, with 90% of the course taking place on trails (not technical). The total run will be very scenic and approximately 10 miles long, and will include a drop-out point for those runners who prefer a 5-6 mile course.
While Paul & Shawn are looking to establish the race as an annual event, they both wanted to do a low-key event this year to get it off the ground.
The event will begin at 10am. Overall the organizers just want everyone involved to have a good time and are hoping for 50-75 runners. After the run, participants are welcome to take part in an afternoon bonfire with the Patriots game, while enjoying chili and other simple post-race food along and a seasonal selection of beverages.
Pre-registration is available online by clicking here, however there will be no official race form, no official timing, and no official distance. A suggested donation of $20+ per runner will be collected the morning of the race. There will also be fun prizes available.
